You can use your phone as a Walkie Talkie with Microsoft Teams

You’ve probably heard of Skype, the service that allows you to talk to people on your computer or phone for free over the internet, but Microsoft Teams is an app for iOS and Android that might just be better. Microsoft Teams gives you the ability to see and speak to your team, friends and family in real time, even when you are in the middle of a conversation. Plus, you can easily share files, play games, send messages and much more.

Microsoft Teams is Microsoft’s new, free and cross-platform, cross-device collaboration app. It was launched yesterday on Android and iOS. I’m a big fan of Microsoft Teams and I think it’s a great new option for small businesses, since it can be used on multiple devices and platforms, including Windows 10, smartphones, tablets, and even Samsung Gear VR.

Every day people are using their smartphones to get things done. Whether it’s making a reservation or reading the latest news, you can use your phone to accomplish tasks that just a few years ago were only exclusive to computers. But what if you could use your phone for more tasks, like walkie-talkie communication?

Microsoft has published a public preview of the Teams Walkie Talkie app for iPhones, which is intended to assist frontline employees communicate.

Also, the Teams Walkie Talkie software for Android has been in preview for a little over a year and was released late last year on Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro handsets.

In a nutshell, the software allows frontline employees to use push-to-speak services, allowing them to talk one at a time, taking turns talking and listening, much like walkie-talkies.

A new method of communication in the field

The Teams app is being promoted by the Redmond-based software corporation as an alternative to workers lugging hefty and inconvenient PTT radios.

The software features a microphone button that users must touch and hold to speak, and then release to listen to the other speaker, similar to a walkie-talkie.

To give you another example, it’s the same as Discord’s push-to-talk feature.

This cloud-based push-to-talk experience allows for clear, immediate, and secure voice communication, transforming employee- or company-owned iOS and Android smartphones and tablets into walkie-talkies.

One of the numerous advantages is that users do not have to be concerned with frequency static, which is a problem with analog equipment.

Teams will also provide a barrier against crosstalk and eavesdropping, and will be able to work across wide geographic areas since they use Wi-Fi or cellular networks.

Frontline or first-line workers are a critical element in Microsoft’s growth goals for Microsoft 365/Office 365, according to the tech giant.

The Walkie Talkie app can be accessed from an icon in the menu bar once it has been set up.

Users can only connect to one channel at a time, but they can change channels to listen or speak on another. The app also displays the current number of individuals connecting to the channel.
